The film title ‘Sahab Biwi Aur Gangster’ of Tigmanshu Dhulia’s upcoming drama raises eye brows, many feel that the film is an adaptation of yesteryear Guru Dutt’s ‘Sahab Biwi aur Ghulam’ to which the assistant director of the film Neelam Gupta declines, “No it is not an adaptation of any movie at all!”

The assistant director was on the visit to Allahabad where she told a leading daily, “It’s thriller cum drama which I am sure that everybody will enjoy. The movie basically revolves around three characters, as the name itself suggests, ‘sahab’ played by Jimmy Shergil, Biwi, played by Mahi Gill and a gangster. Who is playing that role is a suspense so I can’t reveal that right now. Movie will depict the crisis which the royal families have been facing in India.”

What’s up Bollywood? https://www.bollywoodnites.com/2011/02/21/whats-up-bollywood/ https://www.bollywoodnites.com/2011/02/21/whats-up-bollywood/#respond Sun, 20 Feb 2011 19:25:13 +0000 http://www.bollywoodnites.com/?p=3408

In India, if anything can beat filims (movies) it is only and only Cricket and when World Cup 2011 is in full swing after Indians crushed the Bangladeshis in the opener of the tourney, you could not expect a full house for any goddamn movie. Even if it is the outskirts or rural part of India where currently the name of the game is Cricket and anything and everything is ensemble into ‘Blue’, the color of Indian Cricket team’s jersey.

The jitters could be easily seen with no big ‘Bollywood’ releases until the end of the world cup 2011 and those who have shown a little gut to take the bull by its horns are regretting their decision.

After a celebrative January, February couldn’t take it further, only ‘Yeh Saali Zindagi’ opened as per the expectations and did a good business before ‘Patiala House’, a film based on Cricket only, opened and ended on a lukewarm response – another flop for Akshay Kumar.

However, Vishal Bhardawaj’s ‘7Khoon Maaf’ was anticipated to open full house for its promos and songs ’Darling’ but it was seriously foiled by cricket mania. The film opened with a lukewarm response and to make the matter worse, it received a mixed bag of feedback from audiences.

Now, it is better for the ‘Bollywood’ to sit and watch the World Cup rather churn up flop after flop, even good films can go unnoticed as audiences are unwilling to go to theaters.

Arunoday and Aditi Kiss, Make Love and Make Up in Yeh Saali Zindagi https://www.bollywoodnites.com/2011/01/31/arunoday-and-aditi-kiss-make-love-and-make-up-in-yeh-saali-zindagi/ https://www.bollywoodnites.com/2011/01/31/arunoday-and-aditi-kiss-make-love-and-make-up-in-yeh-saali-zindagi/#respond Mon, 31 Jan 2011 09:16:56 +0000 http://www.bollywoodnites.com/?p=3062

It seems Sudhir Mishra had a good look over the ‘Love Affairs’ that brew, steam and overflow in the Urban – Metro – India, between couples, else he would not have stuffed 22 kisses, steamy shots and love making scenes between Arunoday Singh and Aditi Rao, rather shooting conventional songs and dance sequences.
22 kisses, way too much to handle.

Arunoday isn’t new to this kind of role; he has experience of this front. In ‘Aisha’ he played a flirtatious relative to Sonam Kapoor while in ‘Mirch’ he tasted the spicy bed scenes with ‘Raima Sen’. Aditi who was last time seen in ‘Delhi 6’ could have felt the uneasiness – experience on screen smooch – but having Sudhir Mishra behind the lens means appreciation on cards.

Simple yet HOT

The maker of some critically acclaimed films Sudhir say that the two are shown as young couples based in Delhi who is in love and every time they fight, they kiss each other and make up. Thankfully, for the audience, this couple quarrels a lot and has set a record of 22 smooches in the film, leaving behind Mallika Sherawat’s 17 kisses in Khawahish.

Back-less but not kiss-less
Stop dreaming, if u can

February Releases: Bollywood Challenges Cricket https://www.bollywoodnites.com/2011/01/25/february-releases-bollywood-challenges-cricket/ https://www.bollywoodnites.com/2011/01/25/february-releases-bollywood-challenges-cricket/#respond Tue, 25 Jan 2011 13:47:13 +0000 http://www.bollywoodnites.com/?p=2911

If you still believe, its not ‘Air & Water’ but ‘Movies & Cricket’ that we Indians cant live without. Then February is surely going to be your month as the cricket world cup that will start in February will surely steal the light and your drawing room space. Our very own Bollywood is in no mood to challenge the cricketing event but it can’t deny the fact that movies will be another mode of entertainment when Indians will be oiling their bats.

In the month Bollywood will witness few dominating movies and will test the credentials of few actors who slump badly last year like Akshay Kumar. However the promising releases that is sure to ignite the desire of watching movies is Vishal Bhardawaj and Sudhir Mishra’s films which promises to be a run riot at the ticket window. And then, courteously hand-over the baton of responsibility to fascinate the country in the second half of the month to “a game that Sachin Tendulkar plays”.

The very first release of the month is RUN BHOLA RUN starring an unlike Govinda, and an unmute Tushhar Kapoor. The Glamour portion is handed over to Ameesha Patel and Celina Jaitley (Even a Fardeen khan seems acting like Marlon Brando, when he is cast opposite these two glam dolls). Hope it works for Chi Chi & Co.  Director Neeraj Vora too is not breathing easy, he is on a verge of completing a hat trick of duds, after Phir Hera Pheri and Shortkut-The Con is On. I wish at least this could ‘Run’ all the way but after looking at the trailer of the movie it seems the audiences will do the running. A special suggestion to Tushhar “few things are better, if left unsaid” Maae O!!

Sudhir Mishra, the maker of critically acclaimed Hazaron Khwaishein Aisi, is ready with another thrilling love story starring his favorite Irffan Khan and his muse Chitrangada Singh in Prakaash Jha Productions YEH SAALI ZINDAGI. The Movie also Stars the tough Singh (the only Masculine character in ‘Aishaa’). Irffan Khan seems to be back on track after letting down his own standards in films like Knock Out and Hiss. We wish this talented cast and crew a successful ‘Zindagi’ all the way.

Just a week before the cricket world cup, Akshay Kumar wears his cricketing gear to run us over in Nikhil Advani’s PATIALA HOUSE. The Actor and Director of the film don’t want to remember their last horrible outing together in ‘Chandni Chowk to China’. So after making people laugh at him and his credentials as an actor, Akshay finally gets serious in this one. He plays an Indian born cricketer who dreams of playing for England. Anushka Sharma plays Akshay’s love interest. Rishi kapoor and Dimple kapadia play the ‘not so interested’ parents.Let’s see if Akki manages to maintain a good line and length at the Box Office this time around. Or is it going to be yet another wide one, after Tees Maar Khan, Action Replay and many more.

Vishal Bhardwaj turns match maker in 7 Khoon Maaf, finds 7 grooms for a Bride (Priyanka Chopra). Even though the film is releasing just a day before world cup’s inaugural match between India and Bangladesh, Vishal is sitting pretty relaxed. He seems to have total control over the audience’s nerves, when it comes to story telling. The story is inspired by a Ruskin Bond short story “Susanna’s Seven Husbands”, but as the past has witnessed Vishal giving full credit by presenting it in an even better way than the original ones he has adapted from. And with an interesting cast including names like Naseeruddin Shah, Irfan Khan, John Abraham, Niel Nitin Mukesh, Anu Kapoor, Russian Actor Alexander Dyachenko and Shah’s Son Vivaan. I bet you don’t want to miss this one, unless you get a last minute call to join the Indian cricket squad.

Get ready for a trip to Mumbai Pickpocket’s infamous area named Bhindi Bazaar releasing later this month. This realistic flick looks really promising, especially after looking at the talented cast, including Kay Kay Menon, Pawan Malhotra and Piyush Mishra. First time director Ankush Bhatt showcase the Betrayals, Revelations, Deceits and Vengeance inside the life of people living in Bhindi Bazaar. Will have to wait and watch whether the Audiences gets pick pocketed or get their money’s worth.

Tanu weds Manu. Still riding high on the success of 3 idiots, Madhavan is back in a light comedy romancing Kangna Ranaut. If you are totally being ignored by your close ones for not inviting you in any wedding, then you could compensate by attending this one.

Vinay Pathak teams up with Saurabh Shukla in comic thriller UTT PATANG. I guess the title in itself gives you the idea of the story. Do I need to say more??

Dhobi Ghat , a film directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan starts nowhere and ends nowhere but there lies the essence of the movie. The whole ninety minutes  the audience expects something to happen , some climax or a high point to take place and thus some kind of disappointment might be faced by a few who expect it to be ending in a conventional happy or a sad manner. For that matter there exists no situation which one might call as the end. Kiran Rao has left it completely to the audience to decide way they want to perceive the movie.

There is no one story but a few inter-meshing plots moving around four lives which are closely and yet not closely inter-connected with each other. Monica Dogra (Shye) plays the role of an American Indian Banker who has come to India for exploring her skills further in photography. On other hand, lies Amir Khan, a self- absorbed solitary modern art painter who cherishes his solitude all the more when he comes across few tapes of the previous Tenant, Yasmin (Kriti Malhotra). Vicariously he lives a Life shown by Yasmin through those clips which she had made for her brother. In between we are exposed to the real world of Mumbai shown through the eyes of a washer man Mannu (Prateik Babbar). The dirty darkened walled buildings , congested habitat of the hard working Mumbaikers , the common daily struggle to make both the ends meet in Dhobi Ghat makes it  a worthy eyepiece for the ones who are ignorant of the yet darker terrains of life.

Kiran choses the characters coming from different walks of life but equates them all at a same level as she weaves it all in the same shade of emotions and so is the audience woven into the same milieu. With an unconventional direction , Kiran Rao has dared to structure this  Genre differently but not by adding anything novel to it but rather keeping it as plain and raw as it should be. By the end it looks like the part of anybody and everybody’s life. It is a must watch if you are a seeker of something raw rather than frivolous.

Review: Dhobi Ghat https://www.bollywoodnites.com/2011/01/21/review-dhobi-ghat/ https://www.bollywoodnites.com/2011/01/21/review-dhobi-ghat/#respond Fri, 21 Jan 2011 14:17:56 +0000 http://www.bollywoodnites.com/?p=2864

You may not have found Aamir Khan misjudging a project so often but this time under his wife Kiran Rao’s influence Mr. Perfectionist failed to judge the end result. Many will argue that Kiran has already made it clear before the release of the movie that it will not be a typical Bollywood kind of movie but a documentary cum drama.

However, it is not understandable where ‘Dhobi Ghat’ was unusual except a film without songs and interval. For the sake of intellectual and art film one can’t appreciate a half baked, ill executed project, just for the sake of Aamir who has a lot of good work behind his back. Do we really applaud a documentary that is influenced by a drama rather than being raw and uncut, it only ends up as a chase in travesty.

The documentary rather than the film actually tells us the story of a girl Yasmin Noor (Kriti Malhotra) whose recorded tapes finds a hand in Arun (Aamir Khan), a painter, loner, intense and mostly silent who meets the girl Shai (Monica Dogra), an investment banker who is on a sabbatical trip to Mumbai from USA to pursue her hobby, photography. Shai gets a friend in Munna (Prateik Babbar) who is a ‘Dhobi’ and aspires to become an actor. On paper you will find the story intriguing. How the four characters are linked?

Shai meets Arun in an art exhibition and falls for him after a one-night stand but Arun gets apologetic in the morning and withdraws himself from any emotional attachment, displays a remorseful and impulsive behavior which makes Shai more than surprised.

She gets close to Munna and becomes his friend after realizing he knows Arun and his whereabouts.  Shai gives a favor to Munna – portfolio pictures – and in returns asks him to show her the real Mumbai. The intriguing and poignant part of the story is Yasmin’s video tapes that shows her life in Mumbai which is narrated and captured on a handheld video camera which Arun finds when he shifts into a new flat.

Overall Dhobi Ghat is all about Aamir and the story of Yasmin that plays on the video, Prateik and Monica works as fillers to the story all this while. Aamir’s character is a little too silent with same expression till the end and moreover his lighting up cigarettes too often looks artificial.

Dhobi Ghat being Aamir’s movie will get audience on the weekend but it will start hurting the actor later in the week more than anyone else.

The cinematography of Tushar Kanti Ray isn’t applaud-able, barring few frames. The background score of Argentine composer Gustavo Santaolalla was only soothing aspect when you start getting mild headache.

The film is a contrasting reality to what Aamir has done so far before this and that is the gist of the film which comes on the canvas at the end, but only few, who understand art, can make it out.

Review – No One Killed Jessica https://www.bollywoodnites.com/2011/01/08/review-no-one-killed-jessica/ https://www.bollywoodnites.com/2011/01/08/review-no-one-killed-jessica/#respond Sat, 08 Jan 2011 07:56:36 +0000 http://www.bollywoodnites.com/?p=2555

Filming a real life story that has already been a part of the news and newsrooms for years in indubitably is a difficult task. In spite of this fact, we must appreciate director ‘Raj Kumar Gupta’ for his brave attempt of narrating one of the most sensational real life stories following the murder of model ‘Jessica Lal’ at a Delhi nightclub in 1999. There are no surprises for guessing that above all, the director takes refuge in his cinematic liberties and thereby deviates a bit from the real story in some of the aspects like the character of Rani Mukherjee, who plays dual characters of journalist and an investigating police officer of the murder makes people wonder. But this is more imagery than real.

We can’t deny the fact that Rani Mukherjee in spite of being loud and sheer in some of the scenes look unmistakably wondering but it was balanced more or less by Meera Gaity who played a media woman puts a rocking performance. Vidya Balan as Sabrina Lal (Jessica’s sister was Sabrina) appears to be a bit subdue though overall she has delivered a good performance.  The two leading ladies are indeed the soul and spirit of the film. Other casts of the film Model turned actress Myra Karn who played Jessica Lal in the film doesn’t pull any surprises but she looked fine.

She makes her debut with this film and as a debutant she appears well versed with the role. Her appearances in the flashback are well portrayed and have come at a critical time in the film which gives a new and well perceived dimension to the story. Apart from these, Rajesh Sharma (we saw him as KK in Ishqiya), who played the investigating police officer, was perfect. Shireesh Sharma as a politician, who tries to save his son has also done a great job.

Model turned actress Myra Karn played Jessica in the film

10 on 10 go to Anay Goswamy’s cinematography. The music by Amit Trivedi is definitely ruling the charts especially the songs ‘ike dilli dilli’ and ‘aali re’ are a huge hit .The rest of the songs too are brilliant and are in line with the film’s demand. Trivedi gave a catchy and lively music that uplifts the spirit behind the story. Dialogues by Rajkumar Gupta speak of realism and truism. But we should not forget that the brazen language just reflects real conversations. Editing by Aarti Bajaj could have been a bit better by trimming down the dragged scenes (candle-light vigil at India Gate) in the film.

Why to watch the film?? A difficult question indeed, the film is replete with double meanings and vulgar language which will surely make it difficult to watch the film with your entire family. However, in a sense, Gupta is successful in portraying the story well, if not then no one would have sat down till the end to watch the climax of the film.

Would like to rate it as 3/5. Go for it if you want to give realism a try or else sit at home and sip a cup coffee.
