Kathryn Bigelow with the Award

It could not have been better than this for Kathryn Bigelow to win an Academy Award a day before the world would be celebrating International Women’s Day. The Hurt Locker not only wins the Best motion film award of 2009 at 82nd Oscar night but also Kathryn become the first woman director to win Academy Award in its 82 year history.

“This is the moment of a lifetime… it is so extraordinary to be in the company of such powerful filmmakers. I really want to thank the Academy. The secret to filmmaking is collaborating and I had a truly extraordinary group of collaborators. I want to dedicate this to all men and women in the military who risk their lives on a daily basis,” said Bigelow after accepting the award.

It looked as if the stage is all set to bestow Kathryn Bigelow; ‘The Hurt Locker’ came in as a surprise at the nominations last month and since then it has up its stacks as the time started descending towards the Oscar night. ‘The Hurt Locker’ is an exciting and nail-biting story based on Iraq War about a bomb defuser SFC William James played by Jeremy Renner, whose wildness and obsession to risk endangers his support team.

However, ‘The Hurt Locker’ failed to win the Best Actor Award; Jeremy Renner did win the nominations but lost to Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) while Sandra Bullock wins the Best Actress for ‘The Blind Side’ a day after she was given Worst Actress Razzies award for ‘All About Steve’.
