Hollywood have smelled the saffron in the Indian sub-continent and they are all set to release at least 8 movies under PVR Pictures in the coming days, the first quarter of the year – Jan to March. We have come up with a little – fairly useful – details about the ones which are going to release soon in India – Fair Game, Another Year, Somewhere, Rabbit Hole, Biutiful (Spanish), The Way Back, London Boulevard and The Eagle.
The first to open up in Indian cinemas is ‘Fair Game’ starring Naomi Watts & Sean Penn, is a fascinating action-thriller based on the books “The Politics of Truth” by Joseph Wilson and the autobiography “Fair Game” by Valerie Plame Wilson. It is a story that unravels the real life story of government policies and agents working in the CIA. Fair Game has received largely positive reviews supported by superb performances by the lead actors. It was one of the official selections competing for the Palme d’Or at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. Watts began shooting for the film fresh after the birth of her second child. Hope the baby brings some extra charm into the already beautiful Naomi and we get to see together a power packed performance from her and the fiercely talented Sean Penn. It is all set to release in India on 7th of January, 2011.
‘Somewhere’, is written and directed by Sofia Coppola and starring Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning. The movie portrays the story of how a Hollywood star bad-boy transforms himself after the unexpected arrival of his daughter into his life. Somewhere debuted at the 67th Venice International Film Festival and won the Golden Lion Award for Best Picture. The lead actor of the film Stephen Dorff has become one of the most respected young actors in Hollywood. His recent credits include the movies like “World Trade Center” (2006), “Covert One: The Hades Factor” (2006), “Shadowboxer” (2005) and the Disney thriller “Cold Creek Manor” (2003). The film ‘Somewhere’ however received mixed to positive reviews from the critics abroad.
Amongst the new releases, the films ‘Another Year’ and ‘Rabbit Hole’ are the inspiring ones with a lot of exploring emotions, amongst maintaining a family relationships. ‘Another Year’ is a British drama film written and directed by Mike Leigh, starring Jim Broadbent, Lesley Manville and Ruth Sheen in the leading roles. The story of the film revolves around a married couple who has managed to remain blissfully happy into their autumn years, and is surrounded over the course of the four seasons of one average year by friends, colleagues, and family who all seem to suffer some degree of unhappiness. The film made its debut at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. Although the film failed to receive any prizes but it was among the most acclaimed films at the festival, and was described as one of Mike Leigh’s best works.

‘Rabbit Hole’ is the film you must have heard about a lot, directed by John Cameron Mitchell from a script by acclaimed playwriter David Lindsay-Abaire, adapted from his Prize-winning play of the same name. Aaron Eckhart, who gained wide recognition from the critically acclaimed film “Erin Brockovich” (2000), stars opposite the popular Nicole Kidman in the movie. The film also stars the two time Academy Award winner Dianne Wiest. It is an intense, hopeful, honest and unforeseen witty portrait of a family searching for what remains possible in the most impossible of all situations. The film received a standing ovation at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. ‘Another Year’ and ‘Somewhere’ are lined up for release on 21st January, 2011, followed by ‘Rabbit Hole’ on the 4th February, 2011.
‘Biutiful’ is a Spanish film directed by Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Javier Bardem. The story of the film observes an underworld figure and a devoted single dad, through his attempts to reconcile with a past love and secure a future for his children as his own death draws near. The film received a good critical support. The film has been selected as the Mexican entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards. It has also been nominated at the 16th Critics’ Choice Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the 68th Golden Globe Awards for Best Foreign Film. On December 17, 2010, the film was named Best Foreign Language Film of 2010 at the 17th Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association Awards. ‘Biutiful’ would be ready for the Indian audiences to watch on the 11th February, 2011.
‘The Way Back’, a fact-based, true-life soldier story about a group of prisoners who escape from a Siberian Gulag during World War II, has been marked up for release on 18th February in India. The film is directed by Peter Weir, based loosely on a book titled “The Long Walk”, by Sławomir Rawicz. It stars Jim Sturgess, Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, and also features Saoirse Ronan. Interestingly, the movie was partly shot in India too. The Way Back has received generally positive reviews. According to the critics, the film isn’t as emotionally involving as it should be, but the strong performances by the lead actors and its grand visual spectacle calls for an applause.
‘London Boulevard’ is based on a novel by Ken Bruen with screenplay and direction by William Monahan, marking his directorial debut. The cast features Keira Knightley, Colin Farrell, David Thewlis, Anna Friel, Ray Winstone and also Sanjeev Bhaskar, of “The Kumars at No.42” fame, as one the characters. The film is about a reclusive young actress from London who hires an ex-con, trying to go straight, as her bodyguard and handyman, but eventually falls in love with him. Actress Keira Knightly sports a different look in the film all together making her more adorable as she won’t be in period clothes or big wigs like in the “The Pirates of Caribbean”. The film has been scheduled for release on 25th February, 2011 in India.
Also, a must watch is the adaptation of “The Eagle of the Ninth” (1954), a Roman epic adventure, which is titled as ‘The Eagle’, releasing all over India on 11th March this year. The story is based on the investigation by a young Roman soldier on the 20 year old mysterious vanishing of the famous and legendary Ninth Legion, at the border of Scotland, in order to honor his father’s memory by finding his lost legion’s golden emblem. It stars Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, Donald Sutherland and Mark Strong and is directed by Academy Award winner Kevin Macdonald.

The Indian audiences will have a wide range of Hollywood films to see in the first quarter of 2011. We are hoping they are going call the shot on the box-office in the coming days as they open in India.
